Alt key

Alt codes - are symbol-typing shortcuts for keyboards. It's available on computers running Windows OS.

Don't get sad if you are not on Windows. There also are special ways to type text symbols from keyboard on Mac and Linux.

Process

To produce alt symbols, press and hold Alt key and, while holding it, enter character's Alt code with your keyboard's numeric keypad. If you want more clearance on this, read my more detailed descriptions on Alt codes on PC keyboard and Alt codes on Laptop keyboards.

There's no alt code for the peace sign. And remember that all alt codes are listed at alt-codes.org. So if you don't see some symbol here, it just means that there's no alt code for it. I call them "facebook symbols". Look here All text symbols for Facebook ϡ for my collection. You can't make them easily, but you can copy-paste them.

Sad face shortcut in MS Word: Alt + #9785. Is there a shorter one?
Answer
It's a differently encoded character and isn't part of alt codes. So you can only type it in MS Word.

No, there's no shorter one. And you can't type this straight into your browser. Only in Word, etc. I recommend you to better just copy out hardcore stuff like this from my All text symbols for Facebook ϡ reference.

I don't know. Works for me.. Make sure you're not typing "01" instead of "1". If that's not the problem, read How to do symbols by using keyboard Alt codes carefully and watch my video.

I don't think you can. Read Keyboard symbols. You'll find there another way to type symbols. As soon as the rupee will get implemented into your computer. It's in Unicode only since 2010 October..
