What would you say if I told you that you can type some symbols right from your keyboard. "Obvious man", right? But what if I told you that you can type characters that are not displayed on your keyboards layout. A huge extended set of symbols. That one sounds much more impressive, huh? And it's true! Alt symbol codes - are a series of character-writing shortcuts for keyboards. It's available on computers running Windows OS. But don't get sad if you are not running Windows! There are other ways to input text symbols from keyboard on Mac or Linux/Unix. Read on to find one.
You can input unusual text symbols and special characters into input fields, by using keyboard codes. The character-typing technique is called Alt codes (on Windows systems). You can do symbols present on your keyboard by using codes too. There's no alt code for the peace sign. And remember that all alt codes are listed at alt-codes.org. So if you don't see some symbol here, it just means that there's no alt code for it. Nevertheless, you can find peace sign and many, many other cool symbols at my Facebook symbols reference.

Some of the symbols look larger than others, and I'd like to use them. (Such as the larger initials 65-118) But when I code these they come up as just standard size text that I could write by keyboard. And some of the interesting symbols (like skull and crossbones) are so tiny that they only show as smudges on Facebook.
Is there any way to enlarge a symbol?

No. I just enlarged some so you can see them better. I don't know of any way to make them bigger on Facebook, sorry :(

I call them "facebook symbols". Look here Facebook symbols for my collection. You can't make them easily, but you can copy-paste them.

It's a differently encoded character and isn't part of alt codes. So you can only type it in MS Word.

No, there's no shorter one. And you can't type this straight into your browser. Only in Word, etc. I recommend you to better just copy out hardcore stuff like this from my Facebook symbols reference.

It seems that there is some symbol for Apple company logo, but it's very uncommon and most systems don't show it. As for other apple characters - I haven't been able to find ones.

Yeah, it's &#8470;. I found that by using my Escape special HTML characters and Unicode entities tool. Use it if you need to know HTML entity of some symbols - great thing.

I like your response "yet." If I knew how to write code, I would write one for a light bulb, a lightening bug (firefly) , a brain, a French Horn, and some other things that I don't remember if they're there or not.

It's almost not about writing code at all. It's more about implementing a character into Unicode standarts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode and painting it for different (hell lots of) fonts.

I'm intrigued now. I hope you don't think I'm pushy, but what if I found the symbol in a font that I have? Would that help? It's not so much that I "have to have it," but that I'd like to help make something new if possible. I don't know if anybody would even be interested in having a light bulb, but it usually stands for an "idea"; "turn the light on dummy" ; or some other kind of thing like that. Besides, I like to learn new things myself. That might sound silly, but what can I say, I'm just a different kind of person.

I'm retired from the US Navy where I was a non-physician health care provider (more or less a doctor without the college degree with some limitations on certain prescriptions that I could write and diagnoses that I could "formally" diagnosis). Now I'm a music major in college getting ready to move from Virginia to Colorado to change my degree program from teaching music to being a music therapist. My husband and I will be leaving my 19 y/o daughter behind so she can go to college here and we will be closer to family in Utah, but not have to live in Utah. The pollution is too bad. We are looking forward to living in the mountains away from the humidity. I don't mind leaving the ocean behind, even though I love the water. I prefer lakes anyway. I've replaced parts of my desktop computer before (that is before the hard drive finally crashed) and install programs usually without a problem on our other computers. My husband is a Database guru, but is not technologically savvy, so I'm the one who has to manage our network and take care of the virus software and other program/hardware issues. I can't write a program though. I took Nevada Basic 25 years ago when I went to college as a Naval Reservist. That programing language doesn't exist anymore I don't think. I couldn't use it to save my life if I tried.

Now you're probably wondering why I just told you all this stuff. It's to show that I'm what's referred to as "a jack of all trades, a master of none." There's a whole bunch of other things I've learned and love to do as well - which is why I say I'm just a different kind of person. I have a hard time focusing on just one thing, and I guess that's why I love to learn new things. That is why this code and symbol thing has now got me quite interested.

I apologize if I have bored you and taken up too much of your time. I actually don't have a lot of time to devote to a project right now, but in spare moments, I can look through the fonts I have that contain symbols to see what they might have, if they would be helpful. I'm almost certain I've seen a lightbulb, but that could also be my imagination.

Although, I'm 18 y.o. and live on the other side of the Earth ^.^ I think you may have a light bulb in Webdings / Windings fonts, but as I've searched through the web - it seems pretty doubtful.. =( If you want to suggest a symbol for implementation - you should better somehow contact http://unicode.org/ . It all depends on WHERE do you want to underline it. If you are trying to underline stuff in a basic HTML document you are making, or on MySpace - try "<u>Your text</u>" (refer to MySpace text codes). If you're in Facebook chat Facebook Chat codes for Bold and Underlined text style. If you are writing notes on FB - read http://www.facebook.com/notes_cheatsheet.php . If you're just using some rich text editor, like MS Word - there's a special button for that.

I'm afraid you can't do anything. It looks like Facebook blocked that symbol from being used some time after your friend have put it in his surname. Read Change Facebook name ت to add symbols, or fully hide FB names and other cool symbols. There are hell loads of them, so cheer up. ;)
